In my experience it’s often higher end ladies who won’t accept references from those who are below them. I’ve been told “find someone else” albeit this was years ago and not referring to a recent experience 
I don’t even do the reference thing anymore. Too much headache. Deposits are much easier plus many accept gift cards. Can just go to the store and buy one in cash if I don’t feel comfortable leaving a trail
